Layers come from the apps that draw technical and layered work. The PDF standard names the uses: “This capability is useful in items such as CAD drawings, layered artwork, maps, and multi-language documents.” Adobe adds that “PDF layers are commonly used in files created with applications such as InDesign, AutoCAD, and Visio.” A layer can be off when the file opens, so a page can hold words nobody sees on screen.

How do you view or hide PDF layers on a Mac?

  • Acrobat has a Layers panel in its right-side panel; when it is hidden, Adobe’s help points to View > Show/Hide > Side panels > Layers. Then “Select the eye icon next to a layer to show or hide it.”
  • Preview: Apple’s guide describes thumbnails, a contact sheet and the table of contents, and no layers control.
  • PDF Textfix shows the file’s default view and has no layer switch.

How is a layer stored in the file?

The catalog lists the groups under /OCProperties, with a default view that turns each on or off, and page content joins a group inside an /OC marked span. The demo documents have no layers, so we wrote a one-page test file with two, “Draft notes” off by default and “Dimensions” on:

/OCProperties << /OCGs [5 0 R 6 0 R] /D << /Order [5 0 R 6 0 R] /ON [6 0 R] /OFF [5 0 R] >> >>
/OC /L1 BDC BT /F1 18 Tf 72 680 Td (Draft note: check the boundary) Tj ET EMC

We drew it with PDFKit, the PDF framework of macOS 27.0.1; this tests the framework, not Preview. The draft line left no mark on the page, but PDFKit’s text of the page still held its words; pdftotext left them out:

PDFKit text: Site plan, sheet 1 | Draft note: check the boundary | Dimensions in meters
pdftotext: Site plan, sheet 1 / Dimensions in meters

What does an edit do to a layer?

In PDF Textfix, text inside a group is a line like any other, and the edit stays in the group: each new character is checked to be drawn in the same state as the text it joins, optional content included. A line in a group the file turns off is counted in the Issues pane (⌥⌘I) as invisible text and stays editable. The free version’s watermark is drawn outside any group, so no layer setting can hide it.

What should you check before sharing a layered PDF?

Look through its hidden layers: they can carry words you did not mean to send (Hidden text in a PDF). If the layers should go, merge or flatten them (Flatten a PDF). The PDF Textfix manual describes the Issues pane.

Questions about PDF layers

Can you see PDF layers in Preview on a Mac?

Not as a list: Preview’s user guide describes no layers sidebar. We tested macOS’s PDF framework, not Preview itself: it drew the file’s default view, so a layer set to off stayed hidden.

Why are PDF layers not showing?

Usually because the file’s default view turns them off. The standard’s OFF entry is “An array of optional content groups whose state shall be set to OFF when this configuration is applied.” A viewer with a layers panel can switch them on; one without shows only the default view.

Why doesn't my PDF print all layers?

A layer can carry a print state of its own, apart from the screen: PrintState is “A name that shall be either ON or OFF, indicating that the group shall be set to that state when the document is printed from a conforming reader.” Acrobat’s Layers panel previews it: “Apply Print Overrides — Preview the document using print-based visibility settings.”
